Mail club gifts for kids

The appeal of a mail club as a gift is not really the contents. It is the envelope with a child's name on it, arriving on a day nobody was expecting anything. Most children under about eight get almost no post of their own, so the ordinary act of something addressed to them landing on the mat does a lot of the work before it is even opened.

Three things decide whether a mail club lands well as a gift, and price is not one of them.

Match the reading level, not the age on the box. A club aimed at four-to-seven-year-olds is a different object depending on whether the child reads independently. If they do not yet, you want something an adult can sit down and read with them — letters, pictures, a story that carries. If they do, a club that expects them to write back or solve something themselves will hold attention far longer.

Decide whether you want it to create work. Some clubs are self-contained: it arrives, it is read, it is done. Others come with an activity, a craft or a reply to be written, which is wonderful if the household has the time and slightly guilt-inducing if it does not. Neither is better. Buying the wrong one for the family you are buying for is the common mistake.

Check how long the gift runs. A one-month trial and a twelve-month subscription are very different presents. Longer terms are almost always cheaper per envelope, but they also commit somebody else's household to a year of post.

What age is a mail club a good gift for?

Roughly three to nine is the sweet spot, because that is when receiving post is still novel and reading together is still normal. Below three the envelope matters more than the contents; above nine you want a club that expects something back from them.

Is a mail subscription a good gift from a grandparent?

It is one of the better ones, particularly at distance — it arrives repeatedly rather than once, and several of the clubs here are built around writing back, which gives a child a reason to put pen to paper.
