The Best Kids' Mail Subscriptions in 2026

There are more mail clubs for children now than there were two years ago, and they are more different from each other than the category name suggests. A sticker club and a year-long story serial are not really the same purchase. Here is what is out there, what each kind is good for, and the ones we would point a friend to.

How to think about the category

"Kids' mail subscription" covers five fairly different things, and knowing which one you want saves a lot of browsing. The full comparison at the bottom of this page is grouped the same way:

• Character letter clubs. A recurring fictional character writes to your child — a snail, a dog, a fairy, a goat. Usually personalized with the child's name. This is the biggest category and the one most people mean.
• Story serials. One continuing story told in installments across a year. Less "mail from a friend," more "a novel that arrives in pieces." Better for older readers.
• Activity and craft mail. Stickers, prints, puzzles, recipes. Little narrative, lots to do.
• Music mail. A themed music experience on CD or download, usually with a booklet and something to do alongside it. The one category that works from birth, because a baby does not need to read to get something out of it — and the one most parents do not know exists, because searching for a music subscription for a toddler returns streaming apps. There are only a handful of music mail clubs, and they are not interchangeable: one is a music-appreciation curriculum by post, one is original songs written for the age.
• Magazines. Not letter clubs at all, but they arrive monthly with a child's name on them, which for a four-year-old is most of the magic — and they are the cheapest option by a wide margin.

What we would pick, and why

Best for the youngest children (under 4)

This is the thinnest part of the market. Most letter clubs start at age three at the earliest, and a personalized letter is not much use to a two-year-old who cannot read it. The options that genuinely work this young are Tilly's Letters (from age two, and it lets you add up to three siblings to one subscription at no extra cost) and music mail, where the point is the object and the sound rather than the words — Mailbox Melodies is the one we know of that is written for this age deliberately rather than scaled down to it. Best two-way club

Zip's Mailbox Club at $19.99/mo. Two envelopes a month, and — the part that matters — every package includes a reply card, an envelope and a stamp, with what your child writes back worked into later letters. Very few clubs close that loop.

Best value

Games With Gramma at $6/mo and Heritage Letter at $6.65/mo are the cheapest real letter clubs we found. Below that you are into magazine territory, where the price drops but so does everything that makes mail feel like mail — no name on the envelope, no personalization, and usually an annual commitment.

Best music mail

Mailbox Melodies at $19/mo. A themed envelope on the 15th of each month with fourteen original tracks on CD and a digital download that plays on a phone, a Yoto or a Toniebox, plus an illustrated booklet that tells you what each song is actually teaching. It is written and recorded by one early childhood music educator rather than assembled from a catalog, which is why the tempo is slower than most children's music and the track order goes somewhere — warm-up, movement, skill building, calm-down, lullaby. Worth knowing before you buy: it leans on a CD player, which the club argues is the point, because a child can work one without asking an adult for a screen.

Best for a child who loves animals

Writings from the Wild at $7/mo — a handwritten letter from a different wild animal each month, with a collector's card. Note that the directories all quote its $10 premium tier; the basic tier is $7 and most people do not need the upgrade.

Best for older readers (8+)

The Max Letters at $13/mo: a year-long illustrated fantasy story across 24 chapter letters, mailed twice a month. The Adventure Letters at $12.99/mo is the same idea aimed at US geography.

Best for learning something

Captain Mail at $7.50/mo licenses its nonfiction reading segments from Encyclopedia Britannica and adds a 3D paper craft each time — unusually substantial for the price. Aunty Mikes' Passport Club does one country a month with a recipe card, a music card and a passport booklet.

The full comparison

Every club we have verified, grouped by the five kinds described above and cheapest first within each group. The "USD / mo" column is what the ordering uses: prices in pounds, Australian or Canadian dollars and euros are converted at 2026 rates and marked approximate, and annual or quarterly plans are shown as their monthly equivalent. "Ages" reflects what the club itself states — where it is a dash, the club does not publish one. A club that fits more than one group is filed under the one it leads with.

Five things worth knowing before you subscribe

Check the cutoff date. Most clubs mail on a fixed day and close signups a week or two before. Subscribe on the 20th and your first envelope may be five weeks out — which matters enormously if this is a birthday present.

"Personalized" is doing a lot of work. Some clubs print the child's name on the envelope only. Some write it into the letter. A few, like The Reindeer Post, take a full intake form covering pets, friends and interests and thread the details through the year. All three get called personalized.

Watch the currency. Several of the best clubs are British or Australian. The price you see may be in pounds or Australian dollars — the USD column in the table above does the conversion for you — and international postage is often added on top; Aunty Mikes' adds £4 to ship to the US.

Annual plans are the norm, not the discount. Several clubs have no monthly option at all. Read what you are actually committing to.

A club can quietly stop. These are mostly one-person operations. We found several listed on other directories that have closed or never launched. We check ours and date every listing.
